Enter the fascinating world of explorer and film-maker James Cameron as he investigates the mysteries of our deep ocean environments and journeys to famous shipwrecks like RMS Titanic and WWII German battleship Bismark. Through themes of Pioneer, Innovator, Catalyst and Explorer, trace the development of technology that gives us access to underwater worlds like never before and follow the discoveries that inspired Cameron to make films like Titanic and The Abyss.

James Cameron tour + Maritime Archaeology workshop Years 5–9

Complement your tour of the James Cameron – Challenging the Deep exhibition with a hands-on ‘introduction to maritime archaeology’ workshop. Students use real shipwreck material, a mock seabed, mystery objects and their powers of deduction to piece together the story of a wreck-site. A highlight of the session is taking control of ROV (remote underwater vehicle) units similar to those used on James Cameron’s expedition and investigating the waters of the museum foreshore!

Complement your tour of the James Cameron – Challenging the Deep exhibition with a hands-on workshop to investigate the process of maritime archaeology. Students employ a number of investigative techniques, handle real artefacts, examine different types of evidence and form a hypothesis to identify a mystery shipwreck. A highlight of the session is taking control of ROV (remote underwater vehicle) units similar to those used on James Cameron’s expedition and investigating the waters of the museum foreshore!

James Cameron tour + Writing for Film workshop Years 5 –10

Complement your tour of the James Cameron – Challenging the Deep exhibition with a practical writing workshop that focusses on writing screenplays. In the exhibition students will see an original script from the blockbuster movie Titanic and investigate a range of film-making techniques used by James Cameron on films like Titanic and The Abyss. Using the exhibition as a stimulus, students work individually or in small groups to develop an idea for a short film and investigate how to script it.
